When I was growing up, nobody had this information at their fingertips. Learning to read labels changed everything for me, and it's one of the quiet skills that keeps weight off for good. This little game builds the same instinct, one food at a time.
The food scale at a glance
Every food in the game lands somewhere on a simple 1 to 3 scale. Healthy foods can still be a 2: they're great for you, but so calorie-dense that the portion matters.
Read any label in 10 seconds
- Check the serving size first. A bottle or bag is often two or more servings, so the real numbers can be double or triple what you see.
- Look at added sugar. Every 4 grams is about a teaspoon. The American Heart Association suggests no more than about 25 grams of added sugar a day for most women and 36 grams for most men.
- Find the protein. More protein usually means more staying power. Very little protein plus lots of sugar is a recipe for being hungry again soon.
- Scan the first three ingredients. If sugar, white flour, or oil leads the list, that's mostly what you're eating.
- Watch for "healthy" words. "Natural," "multigrain," and "made with fruit" can sit on foods loaded with sugar. The numbers tell the truth.
Numbers in this game are typical, rounded values. Brands and portion sizes vary, so always check the label on the food in your hand.
